Debating has enjoyed a long and successful tradition in the College. The College has always been keen to provide its students with an informal forum for self-expression and debate. In turn, the students have shown themselves eager to avail of the opportunity to exercise their skills of public speaking and argument.

The Debating Society meets most Tuesday and Thursday lunch-times. Teams of four from all Years compete against each other, culminating in Junior and Senior Chamber Finals and Individual Finals in the last term.

The weekly in-house debating chambers have produced many exhilarating debates that have carried on long after the debate has officially ended! The Chamber is open to anyone who wishes to participate and have their opinion heard and to those who simply wish to listen. It is not unheard of for speakers to energetically address the audience from the floor!!

Through various in-house competitions, the Society has produced very articulate and dynamic Debaters who have gone on to represent Terenure College in national competition. We have enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years in both The Concern Debates and in the Leinster Schools Debating Competition. We have reached the semi-finals of both competitions, on more than one occasion, in the past couple of years. Skills learnt in Debating have also proved very useful and successful in Model United Nations and Toastmasters.

We hope to continue with this successful tradition in future years and look forward to welcoming more and more willing debaters.
